This was one of the highlights of the Barcelona visit and well worth climbing on a bus tour for the day. Montserrat or 'The Serrated Mountain' is home to Santa Maria, one of the most famous black madonnas in the world and to be found up a dramatic thin stairway above the Basilica of the Benedictine monks who live here.... more

I took a day trip from Barcelona to Montserrat. I bought the Transmonserrat ticket, which included the regular train that got you most of the way there and the cremallera (rack and pinion train) which took you up the mountain. Sit in the last car of the cremallera- great views! At the Monastery, I missed the Boy's choir, but did... more

We started with a quick... more

I visited Barcelona for the second time last July, the first time we did not have enough time to make the journey to Montserrat - which i regretted. This time we got the train from Placa d'Espanya, and the ticket includes the cable car journey up the mountain, from what i can remember it took us an hour or so... more

We took the half day Julia tour to Montserrat. The trip itself was quite beautiful. But the tour at Montserrat amounted to a quick discourse on the exterior of the buildings of the monastery. Services were going on in the Basilica so this was unavailable for good viewing. The children's choir was on vacation. The tour guide left the group... more
