Gamla Stan has old world charm. Lots of tourists shops and people watching. There are many places to chose to eat and outdoor cafes but the prices are much more expensive than other areas of Stockholm. Also please be aware of street hustlers trying to play find the ball under the cup. This people are crooks and have quite the... more

Gamla Stan / Old Town does what is says on the tin. The 11th Century birthplace of Stockholm is full of winding, cobbled streets lined with beautifully painted pink and yellow buildings. The shops themselves are great. I won't say that there is no tourist tat, but there is very little. There are plenty of very Swedish little boutiques, chocolate... more

The center and oldest part of Stockholm, the island of Gamla Stan is utterly delightful. Packed with yellow, orange, and red buildings that date back to the 1400s; cobblestone streets and sidewalks; a variety of impressive churches; and excellent views of the rest of Stockholm, you're going to want to spend a lot of time wandering around here. Unfortunately, so... more

Gamla Stan is a small, tightly packed island that feels a world away from the rest of the city of Stockholm. Only a few hundred metres in each direction it is easy to get around and is well serviced by the subway system. Everywhere throughout were cobbled streets and quaint buildings with wrought iron signs in meticulous condition. There are... more

Strolling around the neighborhood for an hour was fun. Narrow cobble stoned streets with tall buildings on either side. It certainly was historic. Unfortunately the area can get crowded - especially when several crusie ships are in port. Lot's of shops selling ice cream; souvineers; and antiques. I'd make sure you visit Gamla Stan but you don't need to spend... more

Gamla Stan is a beautifull historical place with cobbled streets. Nice to walk around for a couple of hours but not really surprising. It's a bit monotonous compared to historical topsights in Europe like Bruges, Florence, ... I experienced it as an open air museum. Enjoy it's atmosphere with a cup of coffee in one of the many cosy bars.... more

Gamla Stan is one of the most enchanting places in Europe. It is on an island in central Stockholm and is a fantasticly preserved peice of 1600's city life. The changing of the guard at the royal palace is impressive as well as the royal museum complete with crown jewels. The winding streets and gates and all so charming and... more

I spent several days in Stockholm in February (2003). It was my first and only time there. I did a lot of walking around the City while there, and this island, right downtown and adjacent to the Swedish parliament buildings and the Royal Palace, was a pretty place to walk around at, filled with historical old buildings, some restaurants and... more
