I recently visited the cemetary with my family on a Saturday at around 2:00 p.m. and found it to be filled with tourists and tour guides. The entire cemetary is surrounded by visiting cars and donkey pulled carriages. We parked in front of the housing project and walked to the entrance gate. We also visited the No. 2 and No.... more

I recently returned from a trip to New Orleans and this cemetery definitely topped my list of places to visit. I do feel compelled though to offer another viewpoint than the mainstream views that this cemetery is an unsafe place. I decided to visit St. Louis Cemetery #1 alone, without a tour group. As a photographer I wanted to be... more

Not sure if I should call a cemetery an attraction but it is. Located just within the French Quarter. Easy walking distance from Bourbon Street. Amazing above ground tombs/vaults with many multi-story. I didn't have any concerns about safety but I was there mid-day and there were others there as well. Has several signs up marking historic points and people... more

Visit the most visited Tomb in the world...Madame Marie. St. Louis #1 is the only cemetery to go to. Take a tour...not safe if you are wandering on that side of Rampart St alone. The tour is worth it....points out interesting history and crypts. more

If anything is left of the fascinating St. Louis Cemetery #1 after Hurricane Katrina's ravages subside, make a point to go there. It's fantastic, especially if you take one of the guided tours. Before you go, read up on the historic Plessy v. Ferguson court case (major civil rights), then go tip your hat to one of our great activist... more

We have always wanted to tour one of the old New Orleans cemeteries but have been a bit concerned about the constant references to muggings and crime. On our most recent trip we decided to go with the Save Our Cemeteries Tour and were glad we chose this group. St. Louis Cemetery #1 is the closest cemetery to the French... more

The cemetery is not to be missed. In addition to the tomb of Marie Laveau, you will find the civil rights pioneer Homer Plessey (Plessey v. Ferguson) and other graves showing a remarkable history. We wandered a bit during the tour and found another unmarked grave that was similar to Marie's tomb -- with offerings and voodoo marks -- near... more

We went on the Historic Walking Tour, and Anna (Ross?) was our guide. We met at the Cafe Beignet, which was very nice. Anna was absolutely fabulous with her true southern charm. She is on a society to preserve the cemetaries, and she is a wealth of information! We loved her! We could have done without the visit with High... more

I thought it was pretty interesting. Went on a walking tour with Historic New Orleans Tours. If you go with them, ditch the tour after going to armstrong park/congo square but before going to the voodoo temple... The tour ran long and the priestess they took us to visit was just weird and rambled. It was like going to visit... more

I went to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 on a field trip with my class. It was very interesting, and I learned a lot about the different tomb styles. We got to speak to the people at Cheaux-Vive (a group of women that restore tombs for a living) They have done a lot of work in St. Louis cemetery No.... more
