Not the best of locations, but the hotel's charm more than makes up for this.... Genuinely pleasant staff welcome you like you are royalty - and everyone deserves that treatment. Unlike other five star hotels The Observatory realises that just because someone may be wearing jeans it doesn't mean they aren't 'worthy' of the same attention as a middle aged... more

This is one place I have wanted to stay since living literally next door to it 10 years ago, but being a local, it's been very hard to justify until I had a very early flight to catch the next day so it seemed just as good as an airport hotel. It's located in a very odd part of Sydney,... more

We moved to this hotel after 2 awful nights in a serviced apartment in McMahons Point. Sydney was busy at the time and it took us a while to find last minute accomodation...a junior suite at the Observatory was pretty much all we could find, and while quite expensive, was worth every penny! The hotel itself is just beautiful with... more

It had been several years between visits, but we found The Observatory Hotel as lovely as ever. The service was highly personal and helpful, and our wedding anniversary was very thoughtfully acknowledged. When booking we were worried, as some reviews have suggested that the hotel is 'tired'. This was not our experience at all. It is certainly not a modern... more

We changed to this hotel whilst in a lounge awaiting to fly to Sydney. We asked for a car to collect us but on arrival to Sydney there was not one there. I called and went through 3 people before I got told there was not one coming. I was annoyed as the queue for cabs was long. At the... more

Management response from
Patrick Griffin, Regional Managing Director - Orient-Express Hotels

I am of course delighted that Michael our Chief Concierge saved the day and I do deeply regret the fact that following the request being made in the evening for a car to meet these guests, that due to a communication break down with the contractor who operates this service, and our normal 'checks & balances', we failed to meet...

Stayed at the Observatory for a night before flying home on a very early morning flight and had mixed experiences with the service received!! On checking in around 2pm we were given a smoking room even though a non smoking had been requested and then when we asked to be changed we had to wait about 40 mins in the... more

I was pleasantly surprised, given the unevenness of the reviews, but also because I rarely find a hotel to be so good, that this was one the best hotels at which I’ve stayed, especially recently. The reception was professional and welcoming, the concierges knowledgeable, eager to help, and very personable, and the Galileo restaurant excellent. Overall the service was great.... more

We stayed recently to celebrate our anniversary. I checked various offers & prices on other sites before calling hotel. Although the package I booked was more expensive than what most other 5 star hotels were offering I was convinced after speaking to the hotel that I would not be disappointed in my choice to stay there. I am so glad... more

Comfortable, relaxing, excellent food and service but the two main Concierges took this hotel to top status; nothing was too much trouble. The hotel has no outside seating area (except over the road by the tennis court) and the bar, although luxurious, lacked atmosphere but these are minor quibbles in the overall five-star picture. more

We stayed at this hotel for New Year, after researching on Tripadvisor and found the service excellent, food on New Years Eve superb and so different from the usual sky scraper, minimalist type hotels you get these days. Concierge very helpful, not only in recommending where to eat but also producing menu's for relevant restaurants. If ever had the opportunity... more
