Located at the base of the Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica (2.5 kms. from La Fortuna, on the road to Catarata Rio's Fortuna and only 15minutes by car from Tabacon's Hot Springs) with a spectacular view of the southeast side of the volcano, we have the advantage of being at a slightly higher altitude than La Fortuna, thus cooler. Also, we are off the main road enough to avoid the sound of grinding gears that are audible from almost all other hotels. The rooms are very spacious (32m2) with 1 double and 1 single bed, a large private bath with hot water, screened windows, ceiling fans, verandas with table and chairs, and landscaped grounds abundant with tropical flowers and birds. Full breakfast, available lunches, horse rental, laundry, internet service and secure parking lot. more » « less

This must be the biggest bargain in the whole of Costa Rica. We stayed at six different places in the country and my boyfriend and I both agreed this was our favourite – even though it was also the cheapest. It’s such a lovely, magical place. The lodge is a bit of walk out of town, but is so peaceful,... more

I had quite an enjoyable time at Cerro Chato. Miguel and his wife were very helpful in recommending activities that me and my 4 travel companions would like. The cabins were clean and the surroundings are quiet and beautiful. We had a great view of the volcano and each morning the hummingbirds were right outside of our cabin. Lots of... more

Echoing the sentiments of previous reviews here, I highly recommend Cerro Chato Eco Lodge. Miguel and Carmen are wonderful, friendly, helpful hosts who go out of their way to assist their guests. We enjoyed a warm welcome and many interesting and informative chats throughout our stay (a few days). We also enjoyed the owners' environment-friendly mindset - after all, this... more

This is a great place, but you should know going in that the cabins are rustic. They are small and simple, but were clean and met our needs. What makes this place a great find are the grounds and the owners. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. We were up early and saw a lot of birds and other... more

Miguel and Carmen know what they are doing. The rooms are very simple, but clean. We had been traveling through the South Pacific, South America and finally Costa Rica for a couple months before stopping at Cerro Chato Lodge. You can imagine how many places we had stayed, and Cerro Chato was one of our favorites. The grounds are beautiful,... more

Miguel's web site sold it to us. He seemed to be very clued up with what is happening in the area. The lodge is situated on the road to the La Fortuna waterfall - and a 30 minute walk out of town. THis did not bother us. Beautiful gardens, but very sparse rooms - this was a shock after our... more

We showed up with 12 college students and 1 professor for a service trip. My group was polite, clean, respecful and courteous. We worked from 7am to 5pm at a school nearby, representing America the best way we could possible have, honoring the mission it took us to that beautiful place. The owner as soon as we arrived change our... more

Followed all of the Trip Advisor reviews here. Cerro Chato is off the beaten path, out of the main town. The only good thing about the location is the proximity to the La Fortuna Waterfall (20-25 min walk). Rooms were no frill, but you get what you pay for. Miguel wasnt overly helpful and the tour prices here are higher... more

I first stayed here in 1999 for two ot three nights when I was traveling with two ladies and three guys to shoot a poster, which we shot at Tabacon Hot Springs. Miguel and his wife were very helpful then, and we had a great time with the shoot and seeing the sites they recommended to us while we were... more

A friend of mine and I stayed there (2 girls travelling alone in CR) and LOVED this place. It was safe, the owners were INCREDIBLY nice and easy to work with, the breakfast was so good, and while the rooms were sparse (this is not a luxury resort) they had everything we needed. We were in one of the "duplexes,"... more
