Montreal in August - ??'s |
|
I'm in the planning stage right now for a trip to Montreal for my birthday (solo), August 9-14. I will be staying at the Hyatt downtown (using points). Two questions: 1. The weather -- Is it very hot and humid? 2. Day trip to Quebec City -- Should I plan an overnight stay, if so reasonble lodging suggestions? Thanks. |
|
1. It can be hot and humid and impossible to walk around in without heading into air-condition every 3 minutes -- or just hot and beautiful and perfect for wandering around and enjoying the city. It can also be rainy and relatively cool, although that's more unlikely. 2. A day-trip is possible to Québec City, but 2 days is better, especially since it's the 400e anniversary this year, so there's lots going on, although perhaps fewer hotel rooms to be found. You can check the events by date here: …sympatico.msn.ca/MonQuebec2008/… If you choose a day trip, I often suggest taking the early train out (because I prefer train travel, much prettier and more relaxing) but taking a late bus back (because the last train back is at 5:30).

Definitely overnight in Quebec City. I suggest you ask for suggestions on the Quebec forum so you can get the most of your stay in that city. As for weather, Tristou has said it all.

Hi; Quebec City is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year. People have been commenting for a few months now that they were having difficulty getting the dates / places they want this summer. You may find it difficult to get the accommodations / price range you’re looking for. Best Regards

For weather, check out a web site like: www.weatherunderground.com which provides you with an almanach and will be more objective than any reply we could possibly give you.
|
hi tristou. to which train and bus lines/companies are you referring? many thanks.
|
Train: ViaRail http://www.viarail.ca/ Intercity bus (hourly departures from both cities): Orléans Express http://www.orleansexpress.com/Search.aspx A day trip to Québec City from Montreal definitely does not do it justice.

Not sure if it is still the case, but last week there were still a few openings at the Hotel Dominion 1912 in Quebec City. And also at the ALt Hotel, which is not in Old Quebec.. but if rooms are difficult to come by, it may be better than nothing. Regardless, seeing as you are so close to Quebec City, make a point of visiting, you will be happy you did.

Firelover- Thanks so much! Surely there are few places for which a single day is enough, but alas that's all my mom (chill993) and I have for this go-round. We've reserved a car, which we think will give us a bit more flexibility than train/bus travel. Northern - I checked and Hotel Dominion is booked (and over budget) for our target date. It looks lovely though!

DallasTricia Did you try the Alt Hotel? Formerly known as the Germain Des Pres? I just checked, and they still have some openings this summer starting at $129.00 and it is a lovely hotel.
|
Just checked a moment ago and ALT's lowest rate is $175 for our week, mid-August... Are you familiar with any more 'budget' accommodations, perhaps less than $100.
