Hi All

We're planning on having our honeymoon in Japan - last week of October and start of November this year. We are looking for something which combines relaxation and culture/temples/etc.

Our current plan is something like:

Tokyo (2-3 nights)

Japanese Alps (5 nights)- some combination of Hakone/Takayama/Kanazawa

Kyoto (5-6 nights)

1st Question: Does this sound reasonable? Are there other places which you would recommend instead?

2nd Question: we were thinking of trying to add on some time relaxing on a beach. We have had Okinawa (specifically Ishigaki Island) suggested to us. What are people's opinions?

Thanks!

Congratulation. May I suggest a "romantic spot" for newly wed, the island of Enoshima near Kamakura.

At top of the hill in Enoshima near the observation tower is a clearing overlooking the ocean, it is popularly known as the "lover cove". There is a bell for lovers to ring as a sign of eternal love. By the side of the bell are racks full of padlocks. You write your name and that of your love one on the padlock and leave it there. Your love is "sealed" and both of you will stay together happily everafter. Stalls there sell those padlocks for 600 yen each but you can bring your own.

Strange to see that you still haven't received any response from more experienced travellers !

I have another "beach" destination for you if you want to stay in mainland Honshu. Shirahama on the Kii Peninsula has a lovely stretch of sandy beach. It is very popular with the Japanese in the summer. We were there this April and lucky for us there weren't that many people. We enjoyed walking bare-footed on the smooth white sand. We're told that the sand was specially imported from Australia !

Shirahama is a resort town, popular for its onsen hotels. The town also has a few sights worth visiting. If you're interested, I can forward more info.

Your itinerary sounds about right - just some suggestions -

-Add Hiroshima and Miyajima and shorten Kyoto and Alps a little.

-5 nights in the Japan alps a little long, particularly November when is colder. It is a good season to see the leaves change colour, which is very beautiful and popular.

-If you like fine dining, add a night to Tokyo and check out some of the Michelin starred restaurants. Bring your credit card! Also, for temples and culture, Kamakura should not be missed.

-For something offbeat and really interesting check out Naoshima and the Benesse Art Site in the Inland Sea near Okayama. Google Naoshima.

Ishigaki is fine, and the Club Med there is quite popular. Its a beautiful tropical island. The problems are 1) cost, as its Japan and the domestic airfare can sometimes be more expensive than an international airfare to Hawaii or Bali, and 2) Typhoons in the autumn, its typhoon alley, so if you are unlucky you will be confined to your hotel until the blow is over. Perhaps you can find a packaged tour which would be a reasonable price.
