“Can't wait to go back!”

Sunset at the Palms

5 of 5 stars

4/4 found this review helpful

First, I went with my girlfriend, Mum and brother, the last two weeks in June. We booked this holiday on the back of some very bad circumstances and we were looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy ourselves. SATP ticked both boxes and more. However, as with anywhere, it won't be for everyone so I will try and be as objective as possible (but can't promise!)

Arrival:- Greated with a smile, a nice cool drink and wet cloth which was just what we needed after 1hr 1/2 transfer. If you get easily travel sick just be warned the journey isn't the best.

Room:- Basic, but lovely. More than enough room for two people but might struggle if you both bring loads of clothes to find space for them all, but didn't bother us. TV was nice at night for falling asleep to, only problem and this is really minor is the lighting wasn't great for the room size. The day bed is excellent, so comfy and relaxing, and the showers are fantastic, 5 shower heads one side and one on the other.

Food and drink:- When they say A/I that's exactly what it is. 3 all you can eat buffets, the breakfast was great, try the beans with peppers and corn beef, a lot nicer than it probably sounds. The dinner and evening buffets were just as good and varied from day to day. I think there are 5 themes but always seemed to be something for all. Friday is the beach BBQ which again is really nice as you can watch the sunset. You also have the beach grill which serves burgers, jerk chicken, tuna melts amongst other things all cooked to order and all absolutely wonderfull. We only ate at the a la carte once, it was really nice but preferred the buffet.
There are three bars, the beach, pool and piano. All serve Red Stripe on tap and have all the liquers that are available. We spent most of the time at the pool bar but it was quite good to have a swim in the sea then walk out for a nice cool Red Stripe (check out Bubba Kegs). There wasn't any limit on how much we could drink and all the bar staff kept pouring us rum no matter what! Try a Dirty Banana and a Humming Bird, you don't even taste the alcohol(good or bad?)

Entertainment:- Was very light hearted and just right. Each night was something different. The BBQ was made up of a fire dancer and guest limbo comp. Other nights there was some steel drummers, dancers and Big Momma which was superb! All these took place at the pool bar. The second week though not all the entertainment went ahead for one reason or another, we had seen it all the week before but felt a bit sorry for those who missed out. The bar staff kept all entertained though and wouldn't think twice about joining in.

Pool and beach:- Not the biggest pool but didn't need to be, if no loungers available you just walk over to the beach which is across the main road but there are crossing guards on all the time. On the beach you do get people asking you to buy all sorts, a polite no usually did the trick but one guy did get a bit annoying towards the end, but not really the resorts fault. Some water sports are free and some aren't. Would definately recommend the deep sea fishing.

Creepy crawlys:- If you don't like bugs, cockroachs or similar things then you might struggle. The grounds have loads of plants and trees and do attract all sorts, we did find one or two cockroach in our bathroom they did us no harm, this was not going to spoil the holiday and you really should expect it given the climate. We did get bitten quite a lot, so do take something with you or ask Ian the pool guy, he really helped us out. We did wake one morning to find quite a large lizard on our ceiling and there were some rather large crabs and frogs at night, these weren't a problem for us but some might not like this.

Staff:- All the staff were so friendly and outgoing. It does say you don't need to tip but we always left something after every meal and when leaving the bar. They really deserve it as they all go the extra mile, and don't really earn as much as the deserve. Kirk, DeWayne, Jermaine and Carrot(Richard) were all waiters and were great with us from day one. Always had a smile and made sure we had all we needed. Carrot even got us some presents the day we left. The barmen were fantastic as well. They always made sure we were having a great time. They all had their own little cocktails, ask Omar(Special) for a Bikini, we have his recipe but he swore us to secrecy(sorry!) we even managed to turn him from a ManU fan to a blue! Garth kept making us flaming Bob's, two in one night wasn't a good idea! Ask him for a Garth Special and tell him J-Mikes sent you. Greg kept us laughing all holiday and was so down to earth. He would get up and sing and dance all night if he could. Ask him to sing the Ding-a-ling song, thats all I'm saying! Ian the pool guy was fantastic came and talked to us every morning and by the second week he eveb made sure we had four loungers together. My lounger was broke in the middle, he went to swap it for another but I told him it was actually very comfy, he said he would put it away for when we come next time!

A couple of things now that didn't ruin our holiday but others might not like. First, if there was a wedding, because the pool area wasn't huge, the guests sometimes took over and did make a lot of noise, but hey there having a party and a good time so didn't let it bother us. Think some other guests though found it intimidating. Also, there were some blackouts on parts of the resort which lasted at the most 15 mins usually in the early evening. Some guests were complaining but didn't bother us that much, not enough to complain anyway.

I know this is a long review but I could go on for hours if I thought anyone would read it all! I am willing to answer any q's so please just ask.

Overall, weather was great, food was great, drink was great and staff were great. Got engaged whilst overthere and already planning the trip next year for our honeymoon.

I just returned from SATP my stay was from 7/1-7/5. Let me start by saying i had a wonderful time!!! The grounds were beautiful, the tree houses were amazing, the rooms were cleaner then clean!!!! The staff was more then friendly, i just loved everything about it. This was my 2nd time to negril and i was more then pleased with the outcome of my stay.

FOOD-I noticed some of the reviewes on Trip Advisor and they were complaining about the food but i must say it really was not bad and i can be pretty fussy.

I went with my BF and we are both in our mid 20's ... Although we found this hotel to be very quiet and relaxing we still found plenty to do every day.. I am a trip advisor fanatic and am very particular when it comes to hotels, cleanliness, comfort and so on and I would absolutely return to this hotel and recommend it to others!!!

“Perfect Oasis for Total Relaxation!”

Sunset at the Palms

Jul 6, 2008
2/2 found this review helpful

My wife and I just returned from a 6 night stay at the Sunset at the Palms Resort (6/29/08 to 7/5/08). We thought the resort was doing everything that it could do and was offering as much as a resort of this size could.

The grounds were beautiful, my wife says that it is an "Oasis". We stayed in Treehouse 506 and found it to be very nice, clean and quiet.

Here are our thoughts about this resort:

Grounds: lush, beautiful, perfectly maintained.

Animal life: No problem with mosquitoes, neither one of us got bit and we did not use any bug repellant at all. Saw a large Crab walking on the sidewalk one night. Had one small lizard in our room one night, found one large, speedy black bug in the shower one day (you have to expect at least this - not a problem).

Housekeeping: Cleaned room, made bed, changed towels, restocked coffee service as expected each day.

Buffett: Good assortment of food, they tried to keep a good variety and balance throughout the week. Dewayne provides excellent service in the buffett dining area.

Lotus Leaf Restaurant: Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, no reservations required, you don't have to get too dressed up to go there. Menu was a little odd for me, but nonetheless we enjoyed it.

Beach: The beach is a short walk across the street. No big deal, they have a crossing guard. Beach bar and grill is very good. The ladies will even make you something not on the menu, if they have the fixings right there. For example, they were happy to make me a BLT even though it was not on the menu.

Spa: Somewhat limited in size and services offered. Prices are somewhat high (whose aren't?) for what you receive. Massages and Mani-Pedi's were adequate.

Pool: Actually feels "cold" compared to the ocean - not overused, clean, and has pool floats available.

Pool Bar: Great service and good gathering place. Omar is very friendly and a great bartender.

Taxi Services: We used Mervin Hunter (he goes by Hunter) exclusively. He was very polite, did not try to be your "best friend", just did his job politely and well. We payed $30.00 for a round trip to Negril which included Hunter staying and waiting 2 hours while we shopped. We payed $40.00 round trip to Rick's Cafe and Hunter waited 3 hours for us while we were there. We payed $80.00 for the trip back to Montego Bay airport, it took 1 hour and 15 minutes. It was a safe journey with Hunter.

Weather: High 80's to low 90's each day, humid, rain each day in the afternoon between 1 and 3 or 3 to 5. Most days, just short rains - 1 day several hours of hard driving rain.

Duty free Shopping: The owners of the "Duty free" stores have forgotten that used to mean 25 to 40% off of U.S. retail prices. The deals on name brand watches (TAG, etc.) and name brand jewelry (Yurman, Ybel, etc.) are not like they were several years ago. We found no advantage to purchasing luxuries in Jamaica for the second straight year.

Overall, we enjoyed the time spent at Sunset at the Palms. We consider it to be an excellent value, and we would stay there again.

“grand slam 2008”

Sunset at the Palms

Julie & Tony from Wales UK.
We had a fab stay at SATP we sayed for 10 night in march , It was well worth the long journey , The cabins are fantastic - the best accomodation we had stayed at .
The resort is very laid back and very friendly , the staff were great the food lovely , it does get a bit ' samey ' but hey who cares when your drunk 24/7.
The beach is gorgeous and the musicians on the beach were amazing. Watch out for the family singing with the mother with one tooth in her head , they are fab !!
We hopped on a speedboat and went snorkeling by a reef it was only $15 each and we were out for couple of hours , also we went to the falls and to the black river which was beautiful. We had been to jamaica before so we just went to chill out ,
The entertainment at the palms was interesting to say the least one night a guy was balancing a sunbed on his nose ... well they say there is a star in everyone...
The MC Ras ballie is great and very helpful and the bar staff are great ,
We would just like to thank all the lovely people we met who made our holiday special and one we will never forget
AWESOME !! we be back.

“Most beatuful resort ever”

Sunset at the Palms

5 of 5 stars
Brighton, United Kingdom
Jul 4, 2008
4/4 found this review helpful

I have been really looking forward to writing this review as read many before we went and was really worried with some of the comments. However I can finally give my opinion!
I have to say that it was the most beatuful place my partner and I have ever been to. Everything about it was fantastic, the tree houses were beatuful, the atmosphere was incredible- was so quite and yet so welcomming. The food was delicious and all the staff were the friendliest people I have ever met- not fake at all. I want to give people a few insights though, these are not critisms at all, but think it should be good to let you know, as they worried me due to previous comments and so want to tell you so you know if SATP is right for you.

Tree Houses- beautful, they were just the right size for us and the bed was really comfortable! The shower was lovely and big and the day bed was really nice to go and sit out on. Not once did we put the TV on (who would in a place like that!) so never knew what that was like. The maids were always clean and our room was always cleaned by the time we got to our room by 6pm.

Food- We have been to a few all inclusive results before, which were very large and therefore provided a huge range of variety. However, SATP is not a big resort (which is what we wanted) and therefore there was not a lot to choose from- but my plate all always overloaded! Every day there was a different theme which was always nice and therefore we never became bored of the food. However if you are a fussy eater, then i wouldnt recommend it as they never served burgers, chips or anything like that at dinner- the only place you could get that is on the beach bar in the afternoon, which was gorgeous! Also a lot of their meat dishes were jerked and therefore had a kick to it- again may not be sutable for young children or fussy eaters! They also had a resturant named the Lotus Leaf. We went there twice and loved both times- amazing food!

Beach- The beach was beautiful, we definatley had the best area, the other sides had a lot of seaweed and sea grass. Crossing the road really wasnt a problem, the guard always saw you coming and was ready for you to cross each time and were very friendly. We are next to a local selling area, but they never come and hassle you, and if you are on the beach all the time like we were they soon get to know you and leave you alone completely. The only people who do come upto you are the musicans, they sing many bob marley songs but if you have no money they soon walk away. There are guardsmen between all of the beaches, so I always felt safe if my partner went for a walk or somehting. If they ever saw me on my own, they would come and have a chat and make sure I was ok.

Weather- who is stupid enough to complain about the weather when it is raining season! i mean yes between mid day and 4 it did cloud over nearly every day and we had rain for upto 30 minutes, but it was so welcomming and refreshing as incredibly hot. Also the rain doesnt stop you from going into the sea, pool or jucuzzi, so i really didnt see what the problem was with previous people complaining!!!

As i said, these are not complaints, everything I have mentioned above was perfect for me, but if you do have young children or what an all inclusive to be heavy drinking, loud music and big entertainment (in my view tacky) then SATP is not for you.
