“Highly recommended”

The Metropolitan Bangkok

Mar 30, 2008

We decided to spend a little more for our first few days in Thailand to recover from the 24hr trip. I am glad we did. The Oriental and other top end Bangkok locations are not my style (although I don't doubt that they are very nice). Many other places seem to try to be like the Oriental, but for better rates, such that the design goal is the same, but with differing levels of success. This often leads to middle of the road places that are filled dumpy furniture and fixtures that resemble those of the typical top end hotels, but end up for me just seeming cheap and depressing. These places are not cheap, just less than top end, and as such, I would rather pay less and get less somewhere else that is not pretending to be nice, as the illusion is lost on me. The Metropolitan is thankfully not on this spectrum. It is a mod decor hotel. All clean lines and serene atmosphere. No pretend colonial decor. The beds are comfy, the bedding is top quality. The staff is friendly and attentive, without being in your way. The pool is ample, and when I was there almost always empty. There were usually 3-10 people around the pool, working on their skin cancer, but we always had the pool to ourselves. The shower area is spacious and serene -- towels everywhere -- plenty of private showers, steam room, huge hot-tube, all decorated with well chosen tone-on-tone nicely tactile tiles. Again, I almost never saw another person in this area. I never shared the hot-tub with anyone. There is also a full compliment of Spa treatments.

The free breakfast was among the best breakfast experiences I have ever had. I usually do not bother with the free hotel breakfast, even at nicer hotels, as they typically suck. This is an all you can eat buffet (which sounds bad, I know) with menu items as well. There is copious amount of fresh fruit, delicious yoghurt parfaits in tiny cups, each topped with "chefy" house-made toppings, amazingly good cold cuts of salamis, turkey, ham, as well as toast and pastries and freash juices. The pastries were my least favorite part (it is usually the opposite for me, the pastries are very good for Asia, but the meats and yoghurts are just that good here. And this is just the buffet! There is a full menu from one of Bangkok's premier kitchens to choose from, as well. To put it another way, if this breakfast was not free, I would have paid for it and eaten it everyday and been happy about it. I have never experienced this anywhere in terms of a free breakfast.

The restaurant for diner here is one of Bangkok's best.

The location is good for shopping (higher end) and close to the train (skyway?). It is not the most charming neighborhood, but to give you a gauge, I prefer the older parts of town to the Sukhumvit (by a wide margin). It is about 200 Baht in a taxi to anywhere the train or water taxi did not take us, so not a real issue. I could spend a couple days here and never (or hardly ever) leave the grounds, between the breakfast, the spa (even including only what is free), the gym, the room, the pool, the sun deck, more food, and round and round again. I rarely feel this way about a hotel.

I also reviewed the Phranakorn Nornlen which I also liked for completely different reasons. I highly recommend both places.

“Sleek & Sytlish with top notch service”

The Metropolitan Bangkok

From the moment we arrived, to the day we departed we received excellent service. Concierge, room service and front desk staff went out of their way to assist us. On arrival (as honyemooners ) we were upgraded to a terrace suite with champagne. The room was huge with a delightful outside shower. The buffet breakfasts are amazing - everyone should indulge in a Met Breakfast. Ultra trendy clientele - and located nice and close to the bar/club area of Patpong. Can't wait to go back!

“Cutting edge luxury”

If you are looking at experiencing a hotel, who not only gets the idea of luxury and service right, but also dares to break the mold of 'chain' hotels in Asia - this is definitely the place for you. I stayed at the Metropolitan for a week on business and it was a sheer delight. The hotel is beautifully designed. Simple, with great attention to detail and quality finishes (many so called designer hotels get this wrong, with cheap, poorly executed design).

I stayed in a Metropolitan Room, which was more than spacious. More like a junior suite, with a great seating area. The bathroom was also massive, with natural daylight and a very cool bath and seperate shower (open plan). Very comfortable bed, Bose stereo, WiFi and although it sounds a bit strange, the lighting was fantastic - a true indication that every aspect of the design had been taken into consideration.

The dining choices were very good. Cyan on the ground floor has inventive, modern cuisine options and overlooks the pool. The real 'find' is Glow. It is a bit tucked away on the first floor (but aren't all the best secrets hidden). I have never tasted such delicious healthy food. I would recommend that all hotelliers around the work flock here to learn how to keep their guests in good shape. Glow is next door to the spa and gym (one of the best I have experienced in an urban hotel). The pool is also great for a work out - a good size and perfect for laps. The scene around the pool is also very 'happening'. I had one treatment in the spa - the signature COMO Shambhala massage, which was very good.

The Met Bar was certainly a nice bar, but only seemed to get busier later into the evening. To complete the fantastic food experience - the Thai cuisine on the Room Service menu was some of the best I have ever experienced (the beef curry and catfish salad were outstanding).

The staff were excellent. Friendly, helpful and well trained. The hotel is located in the heart of the business district, so was perfect for meetings. As I was there also over a weekend, it was also a great position for the sights and shopping (there is a great night market a 5 minute walk away).

If you like your hotels to be fresh and innovative - this is certainly the place for you. The Metropolitan is a superb hotel and to top it all, a great price!

“Great large rooms”

The Metropolitan Bangkok

Mar 5, 2008

Great hotel in central location. Massive rooms & bathroom. Not your standard buffet breakfast, but rather a selection of fruits and cereals then a choice of 6 or 7 hot meals made fresh - best I've had in large hotel. Had dinner one night in the restuarant which was good, only down side to stay was that it was the weekend before an election so there was an alcohol ban and the bar was closed.

“An oasis in buzzling Bangkok”

The Metropolitan Bangkok

We spent 5 nights in a Met room at the end of December. We were greeted at the door by a guest relations officer and were escorted to the room after a quick, friendly and hassle-free check-in.

The room was spacious and very tastefully decorated. The bathroom was huge. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with drainage in the shower, so there is a bit of a bad smell. We kept the bathroom door shut to avoid it from spreading into the room.

We stayed in a room with a connecting door the first night. The connecting doors are not soundproff, and we ended up listening to the lady next door talking on the phone from 4:00am to 7:00am! After complaining to the front office, we were moved to a room without a connecting door. They had arranged the entire move including moving our clothes from the closet. Everything was in place when we got back in the afternoon. Great service!

Breakfast at C´yan was excellent. The Met breakfast included in the room rate consisted of a continental buffet and made to order eggs of your choice. Poached eggs florentine were delicious and beautifully presented!

Room service was quick, and the food was well prepared and reasonably priced.

We didn´t use the spa, but it looked nice. The pool area is small but nice and quiet.

Location was ok. Because of Bangkok´s horrific traffic situation, we preferred to take the BTS into town. The closest BTS station can be reached by taxi. From there it´s just a short ride into the centre (e.g. Siam). Getting a taxi back to the hotel was more difficult, as many drivers don´t want to drive to Sathorn Road due to the traffic jams.

Overall, I can recommend the Metropolitan. It´s good value for money. Service was good and always with a smile. Location could be better, but you also get to a more quiet neighborhood, which can be nice in buzzling Bangkok.
