“a different look at bangkok... at a price”
we were looking for a different place to stay in bangkok.
having done the KSR circuit many times, and being "forced" to stay in 5-star hotels on a weekly basis for work, the last thing that i wanted was a standard 5-star boring room, impersonal service, and cliche service.
this being our 6th or 7th stay in bkk, we looked around for something with a twist.
whilst i would have liked to check the new river side boutique hotels (ie arun residence), or the other upcoming small hotels (chakrabongse cillas, ibrik, reflections, phranakorn nornlen or luxx), i followed my guts and went in for the eugenia although it has only been reviewed once on this site (and nowhere else).
the hotel is great, no question about it. the service is excellent, with very good small touches that defenitely make you forget the dryness of the so-called 5-star service of international hotels.
breakfast is grand, the decoration is lovely, homy, personal, done with taste by someone who defenitely appreciates beautiful things (coffee table books, art objects, flowers, furniture).
whilst i do not necessarily condone the abundance of dead meat on the walls and floors (from zebra skins, to gunu heads, antilope horns and giant spiders in a frame), it does add to the rustic colonial feel of the place.
after all, this is just what people used to have in their houses and on their walls before we all became far too sensitive and politically correct!.
a nice touch is the private tuktuk that drives you to the metro station or the nearby restaurants (btw try the "le dalat" for a taste of original vietnamese indochina cuisine).
location is not ideal as it is at the far end of the soi, not very close to anything really, but fiine enough if you are willing to walk 10 minutes to the MRT, the main street or the sleezy "soi cowboy"....
the room is very nice (we were in the eugenia suite). it looks great on the pictures, feels a bit smaller when you are inside, and once you get over the ultra hard bed (was there a matrass at all??), you feel just like at home (except of course that my home does not have a bathroom that is that spacious, or a old-fascioned standalone bath tub, or coloured antique tiles on the wall...., but you know what i mean!
this comes of course at a price.
a price that is very very close to the top hotels in bangkok (ie more exspensive that thebanyan tree, 20 dollars way from the sukothai hotel, 25 dollars from the oriental etc...), and, in my view, a price that is somehow unjustified for bangkok.
but ala, i'll let the price of the room go.
what i do not fogive are the hidden little extras that pop up on the bill when you are about to check out like the 150 bath for an extra shot of espresso at breakfast.
come on people, 150 baths?? this is thailand? this is a country where you have a full course of dinner for 150bath... hell, even starbucks is not that expensive!
call me a cheapo, but it is not the money, it is just the principal of it all!
having said that, i'd recommend the eugenia to anyone, any day, cause it is different, personal and has a charm to it that is seldom found in big cities nowadays!
have fun!
