My boyfriend and I stayed at the Tropicana Grand Oasis for one week June/July 2008. We originally booked to stay at the sister hotel the Tropicana Azure Club however 2 days before we went we were told that the hotel had building works (considering this is a brand new hotel I assume they were still building it) so wasn't taking any guests and we had been moved and the accomodation was of the same 4* standard - I disagree.
THE ROOM we stayed in was adequate but hardly 4*, the bath was stained yellow from ingrained dirt, there was no plug, the water ran yellow in the sink, the tiles were mismatched and the general finish to the tiling and fittings was poor. The room itself was ok but as we were on a ground floor we had several encounters with local wildlife in the room including large ants, beetles and even a lizard. There were 2 decent sized beds which we pushed together to make one which was comfy, the tv had several English speaking channels including a movie channel which was great and there was a small fridge which was stocked with mineral water on arrival. However the room in general was dated and the furnishings were tired. The terrace area was nice with comfy seats but there was no outside light meaning that after about 7:30pm it was a useless space.
THE POOL area was nice, the main pool was large and clean, the was a seperate childrens pool and another large circular pool which could be used by anyone but was where the "aqua gym" and volleyball games were held. There were plenty of sunloungers but they did get reserved quite early despite the pool boy's best attempts and there weren't enough parasols to go around so if you weren't using yours you would be pestered to have it taken away. *please beware windy weather and the parasols, the bases are not heavy enough to hold them down, I was hit on the leg by one and spent the last 4 days of the holiday with a HUGE bruise on my leg*. You did get quite a lot of hassle by the pool aswell from the staff wanting to either braid your hair, tattoo you, give you a massage or take you to the beauty parlour, we gave them every excuse in the book and refused everytime but we were bothered every single day by someone. The pool bar is ok but you only get drinks in small plastic cups, hardly enough to quench your thirst in the Egyptian sun!
We tried THE BEACH one day but found the heat too intense there without the convenience of the pool to jump into. Also many of the loungers are quite far away from the beach bar so you'd worked up another thirst by the time you'd walked back. You also got bothered here for massages etc. And the beach itself was gritty sand not the soft white sands you like to laze around on.
THE FOOD was ok and unlike a lot of the other reviewers we had no problems with Russians or Italians pushing in and leaving cold scraps. There was always plenty and the staff were super efficient in cleaning up and clearing away plates (sometimes too efficient and tried taking drinks and food before I'd finished). There was quite a variety of food also but usually only 2 kinds of meat, chicken and one other sometimes a beef pie type meal or fish. There were 3 other onsite restaurants which were part of the all inclusive package but you did have to make a reservation before eating there. We tried the Italian and the Oriental (there was also a seafood one). Both were lovely although they had limited options and the Oriental was highly misleading as everything on the menu was BBQ (my boyfriend had a kebab and I had a mixed grill) whereas I was expecting it to be more Chinese cuisine. Still the food was delicious and you got plenty.
THE STAFF were all incredibly friendly. Most spoke English although not well enough to have a proper conversation but they were smiley and efficient. The waiters were charming and quick and if you were nice with them they would bring you another drink before you'd finished your last one without even having to ask. All the staff I saw were male, including the maids. Our maid Sayed was very pleasant and cleaned our room very well, one day he even cut some fresh flowers from the gardens and left them in one of the glasses on our table which was very sweet.
In addition:
When you check in you'll be given a towel card each which you can hand in at the poolside or on the beach in exchange for a towel for your lounger, this was handy as you don't have to take your own but the towels were scratchy and instead of being blue and white striped often they were blue and grey from over use.
You get a safe in your room which you don't have to pay a deposit on which is great but ours was faulty and we had to call reception twice to have it reset as it wouldn't accept our code.
There are a few shops in reception one of which sells crisps, chocolates, shampoo, tampons etc but it is quite overpriced 100LE for a Mars Bar which works out at £1 so good for a few snacks but don't spend too much here!
