We stayed at Pop Century 3 nights over July 11 weekend, 2008. This is our FOURTH stay at this resort since it opened a few years ago. We stayed once in the 50's section and all other times in the 60's section overlooking the Hippie Dippie pool.
We are a family of 2 adults (40's) and 2 kids (11 and 12). We have been to WDW 26 times in 10 years. We visit every year for one week at Christmas and stay in a condo off Disney property. We visit every year for 3-4 days in July to play in the waterparks and stay ON Disney property. We always have a great vacation but the Pop Century Resort is our #1 choice.
Suggestion: Pay an extra $10 and request a "preferred" room. Preferred rooms are in buildings located adjacent to the main hall where there's food/arcade/registration/gift shops and WDW bus transportation. A preferred room guarantees you a building location but not a room location. You may get stuck on the back of a building overlooking a playground or a wooded lot. We prefer overlooking a pool. When we arrived on this visit, it was early in the morning and we were able to get a better room - overlooking the Hippie Dippie Pool. This is the best location in the place. Remember, 60's section, overlooking the Hippie Dippie pool. Lots of activity going on, close to everything and a very "resort" feel.
Only complaint I ever have staying in a Disney hotel is the size of the room. The place may claim to sleep 4, but it's a tight squeeze. No privacy. I'm organized but my husband and kids aren't so 3 nights is about all I can take. Also, towels aren't provided at the pools in the value resorts. You have to hunt down housekeeping to get more towels.
Rooms: Small. Any bed we ever had was a double/full but they're comfy - nice and firm. There's 2 beds, a nightstand, a tv/armoire with drawers and a table with two chairs. Plenty of space to hang clothes (bring your own hangers) but not enough drawer space for all 4 of us. Room safe. Bathroom has toilet and shower. The vanity is located outside the bathroom in the room. Place was clean. Housekeeping left washcloth figures for us which the kids decorated on the window sill - everyone does it and it's so much fun.
Pools are great throughout the resort. Each building has it's own theme. Hippie Dippie pool was fab. Always people in the pool. Opens at 7:30 so if you don't like the pool noise, ask for a building at the end of the resort. You'll have to walk to the chow hall, but it'll be more quiet.
Food: Much like the food court at the local shopping mall. They only change the food every few days so choices are boring. Even when crowded, you can deal with it. They charge $13 for a souvenior cup and you get free refills for the duration of your trip. I brought my cup from last year and they never noticed. Hey, it's worth a try.
Arcade was nice. They were having some sort of computer failure so all games were free. It was grrrrreat. When do you get anything free at WDW?
Bus transportation: free and runs throughout the day and night to anything Disney. Note that bus to Downtown Disney can take forever in the evenings. We drive there ourselves but use the bus for the theme parks where you can save $12/per park on parking per day.
Highly recommend this resort for people with kids. Kids of any age. If you don't have kids, it may be too noisy. If you have kids, it's just noisy enough. All the hub bub is really nice!
