The Freedmen's Memorial is not only a testimony to the strength of the freed slaves but to the richness of the art. Initially a burial ground for freed slaves, obliterated by an Interstate, the Memorial is homage to those buried there. David Newton, reknowned sculptor, created the sculpture, developed the overall design and oversaw the commerative plaques surrounding the Memorial.
Great place to wander around and both see and feel the history of freedom for Black Americans.
